Clarity measures the internal and external imperfections of a diamond. These imperfections are called inclusions (internal) and blemishes (external). Most diamonds have some inclusions, as they are formed under intense heat and pressure. The fewer the inclusions, the more valuable the diamond.
Clarity is graded on a scale from Flawless (FL) to Included (I):
While flawless diamonds are rare and expensive, many VS and SI clarity diamonds appear clean to the naked eye and offer great value. What matters most is eye-clean clarity, meaning no visible flaws without magnification.
Some inclusions can affect a diamond's structural integrity. Avoid diamonds with chips, feathers, or cracks near edges, especially in high-contact settings like rings.
