The World of Diamonds

ClarityNature’s Fingerprint Inside a Diamond

Clarity measures the internal and external imperfections of a diamond. These imperfections are called inclusions (internal) and blemishes (external). Most diamonds have some inclusions, as they are formed under intense heat and pressure. The fewer the inclusions, the more valuable the diamond.

GIA Clarity Scale

Clarity is graded on a scale from Flawless (FL) to Included (I):

  • FL (Flawless) – No inclusions or blemishes visible under 10x magnification
  • F (Internally Flawless) – No inclusions, only minor blemishes
  • VVS1, VVS2 (Very Very Slightly Included) – Extremely difficult to see imperfections
  • VS1, VS2 (Very Slightly Included) – Minor inclusions, not visible to the naked eye
  • SI1, SI2 (Slightly Included) – Noticeable under magnification, may be visible to the eye
  • I1, I2, I3 (Included) – Obvious inclusions, can affect transparency and durability
Do Inclusions Matter?

While flawless diamonds are rare and expensive, many VS and SI clarity diamonds appear clean to the naked eye and offer great value. What matters most is eye-clean clarity, meaning no visible flaws without magnification.

Clarity and Durability

Some inclusions can affect a diamond's structural integrity. Avoid diamonds with chips, feathers, or cracks near edges, especially in high-contact settings like rings.
